BAYOU GEORGE — The Bay County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the drowning death of a 2-year-old in the family pool in Bayou George early this morning, but do not suspect the parents of negligence, according to a release.
The toddler’s mother reportedly found the child unresponsive in the pool and deputies pronounced the child dead upon arrival.
Investigators believe the child woke up shortly after their father left for work at 6 a.m. and was able to unlock the sliding glass door and remove a piece of wood the parents had placed on the sliding door track as an additional safety measure, walking into the back yard and into the pool.
According to investigators, the child’s mother woke up at about 8 a.m., found the sliding door unlocked and, fearing the worst, ran out to the pool where she found the toddler.
BCSO is continuing to investigate the incident.
