November and December means science fair time for the area schools.
Rocky Bayou Christian School held its annual fair late in November, displaying more than 175 projects.
Fifth-grader Henry Baltz took overall first place with a project that studied helmet protection.
Other winners took first through third: sixth-grade, Macy Wanner, Abigail Blalock and Kayla Kelly, with honorable mentions to Oliver McKinney, Peyton Ross, Noah Najar, Carson Tingle and Kailey Yang; fifth grade, Annaliese Drab, Bella Farran and Kaine Stine, with honorable mentions to Lela Cawood, Rodney Denett, Phoebe Riches, Jaelyn Myers and Maddox Gonzalez; fourth-grade, Brianna Nutt, Sara Moss and Michael Hadley, with honorable mentions to Corinne Broxson, Andrew Balters, George Campbell, Ella Knox and Keegan Carter.
South Walton High School students Makena Kimball and Alivia Campbell represented their school in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Voices of Democracy Speech Competition, “Voices of Democracy — The U.S. Oratory Project.” Makena placed second, which allows her to continue to the next level. Alivia placed third.
West DeFuniak Elementary School third-grade teacher Amanda Callahan took her students through a scientific project in which they determined the volume of irregular objects by using the displacement method. They also applied the correct units as they recorded their answers and results.
Fort Walton Beach High School student Karsun Barrett is the school’s representative for the Taylor Haugen Trophy, awarded to an area athlete who demonstrates a balance among academics, athleticism, leadership, community service and faith.
Broker associate Hannah Martin of The Premier Property Group hosts her 5th annual birthday fundraiser with the South Walton Academy, Special Olympics Florida Walton County and Westonwood Ranch/Freeport as the recipients.
All three organizations serve students in Walton County.
Martin’s fundraiser is a three-day event, “La Lumière: Party of the Gods”, presented by Destin Plastic Surgery and Duckies Shop of Fun, from Feb. 8-10 at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort and Spa.
