SANTA ROSA BEACH — A vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 98 on Wednesday sent one man to the hospital with serious injuries.
Michael J. Emerson, 48, of Lynn Haven, was driving a 2018 Ford utility van east in the inside lane of U.S. 98 when he struck the rear of a 2003 Peterbilt water tanker driven by 47-year-old Thomas M. Holstead of Vernon, who had stopped for traffic about a quarter-mile west of Veterans Road, according to a news release from the Florida Highway Patrol.
Crews from the South Walton Fire District responded to the crash, removed Emerson from his van and took him to a nearby landing zone, where a medical helicopter flew him to a hospital, a news release from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office said.
Holstead was not injured.
Emerson was charged with careless driving.
The FHP is investigating the crash.
