WALTON COUNTY — A Ponce de Leon man was killed early Tuesday morning after his vehicle was struck head-on by a driver who had been drinking, according to the Florida Highway Patrol media release. .
David Shepherd, who was 59, was heading north on State Road 81 just before 5 a.m. when the accident occurred.
Trevor Shay Burgess, a 22-year-old Westville man, has been charged with DUI manslaughter and one count of DUI with serious bodily injury, the release said. While cresting a hill, his vehicle crossed the center line and hit Shepherd's 2013 Ford F-150 head-on.
The 2008 Toyota Tacoma Burgess was driving then overturned and caught fire, the release said.
Burgess suffered only minor injuries, but his passenger, 23-year-old Brandon Mathew Schmidt of Westville, was critically injured and taken to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center after the crash.
All of the individuals were wearing a seatbelt.
