OKALOOSA DONUTS

After months of anticipation, donut lovers can enjoy prepared-fresh-daily delights at Okaloosa Donuts.

“I’m surprised by how much local love we have already,” said CareySue Beasley, who owns the shop with her husband, Paul Beasley, and her son, Alex Coleman. The family opened Okaloosa Donuts late in December.

Keeping it simple, the shop offers two specific items: donuts and coffee.

“We have the standards that everybody likes,” Beasley said. “We have the cake rings and the yeast rings.”

To prepare for this venture, Beasley and her family took the Donut Trail in Butler, Ohio. The town is known for its many donut shops. The research inspired the family as it selects flavors for the donut toppings.

“We left the menu loose enough so we can match the seasonal fruits,” Beasley said.

Coffees come in both the hot and cold varieties, and one blend includes chicory.

“Some people like the chicory because it’s super strong, and it goes well with the donuts,” Beasley said.

ELEVATED SILENCE

Growing up in Northwest Florida, Jim Hood enjoys outdoorsmen sports, including hunting. While sitting in a tree stand with his son, he contemplated a better silencer for his hunting rifle.

“There’s two loud noises with a gunshot,” Hood said. “People hear only one because they happen so close together.”

That first explosive noise can cause hearing damage, which is why many hunters prefer a silencer. In addition, the silencer allows them to forego protective hearing gear so they are better aware of their surroundings.

Elevated Silence offers a noise suppressor that won’t alter the point of impact, ensuring a clean kill over sending an animal into a wounded retreat.

“Every good hunter always feels a bit of remorse after each kill,” Hood said, adding that the first thing he does is offer thanks to God for providing meat for his family.

Hood and his business partner, gunsmith Ron Collinsworth, consulted engineers, enabled the production process, and in November began marketing their suppressor design.

The product lines can be seen on the Elevated Silence website, but the products can also be found at a small warehouse and store front in Santa Rosa Beach.
