Welcome back to the second half of the 2018-19 school year.
Already looking toward their next big activity are several Fort Walton Beach High School students who auditioned for and were selected to be part of the Jan. 26 Okaloosa County Honor Band: Lyndsey LaBorde, Marina Tobias, Brooke Sanders, Jaylen Eason, Clayton Jowers, McKinley Reynolds, Jenny Zapotocky, Baye Bowman, Riane Neal, Kannon Goodman, Bethany Jowers, Marissa Schneider and Thomas Berta.
In addition to this honor, Riane Neal, Jaylen Eason and Jenny Zapotocky were selected for the Tri State Honor Band, which held a performance this past December. Jenny also performed with the National Honor Band in Orlando in November, while Riane and Kannon Goodman will attend the Florida Music Educators Conference all-state band performance on Jan. 12.
Pryor Middle School’s band program, directed by Hank Phillips, has five students who earned their tickets to the county’s honor band program: Rebecca Dotson, clarinet; Will Harvey, percussion; Jaimz McGee, trombone; Anh Pham, bassoon; Leyla Tingle, flute.
West DeFuniak Elementary School teacher Carla Sconiers begins the second half of this academic year as her school’s Teacher of the Year.
"The children bless me more than I could ever bless them,” Sconiers said. “I hope that my students leave me each year knowing strength doesn’t come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t.”
In December, several of the WDE fourth- and fifth-graders participated in the school’s Tropicana Speaking Competition:
Fourth grade: first place, Carli Nowling with “My Annoying Niece and Nephew”; second, Isabella Adkinson, “Being an Only Child; Kids’ Tables are Awful”; third, Kari Hanscome, “The Man, Walt Disney.”
Fifth grade: first place, Rhiannon Fountain, “Remodel Gone Wrong”; second, Chandler Shoaf, “How to Write a Tropicana Speech”; third, “Gracelyn Daniel, “Our Money Habits.”
Also before the winter break, the fifth-grade students acted as electrical engineers during science class. They were provided materials necessary for creating an electric lighting system.
