DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — A local transformer company's building sustained damage after catching fire late Wednesday.

According to a press release from the Walton County Fire Rescue, multiple fire departments responded to the 911 call about 11:30 p.m. regarding a possible structure fire at Florida Transformer Inc. They arrived to see heavy, black smoke coming from inside one of the buildings containing dangerous chemicals and electrical equipment.

Power was cut off to the building and firefighters entered. The flames were coming from an oven housing multiple transformers, the press release said.

Walton County Fire Rescue, the DeFuniak Springs Fire Department, and Liberty Volunteer Fire Department assisted Argyle Volunteer Fire Department in extinguishing the fire for several minutes. The scene was cleared just before 2 a.m.

The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time, Fire Rescue said.
