For the third year in a row, Wegmans is America’s favorite grocery store. But just barely.
In 2018, the New York-based chain tied with Publix for first place. This year Publix, which has consistently ranked high in the annual Market Force study, was a close second. With a score of 77%, Wegmans beat out Publix by only one percentage point.

Trader Joe’s came in third, while Aldi moved up a slot from last year to fourth place. Some will be surprised to learn that Whole Foods ranked near the middle of the pack, with a score of 60%.
Stores were rated in multiple areas, including item availability, checkout speed, specialty department service, store cleanliness, cashier courtesy, ease of finding wanted items, convenient location, good sales and promotions, as well as value for the money.
When it comes to customer experience, Publix and Wegmans tied for the top spot in store cleanliness and item availability. Trader Joe’s squeaked by Publix for checkout speeds but creamed the Florida chain in cashier courtesy by nearly 10 percentage points.
Perhaps not surprisingly, the study found that “technology-assisted shopping continues to increase,” and neither Publix nor Wegmans were even on the ranking table for recent click-and-collect shopping experiences. Instead, Walmart, Kroger and H-E-B took the top three spots.

For the Market Force study, nearly 13,000 participants were asked to rate their satisfaction with their most recent grocery shopping experience. Respondents represented a broad range of regions, income levels, household incomes and age but were predominantly female.
