DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — An expected 120 disc golf players will take over Chipley Park on Saturday for a unique tournament.

A temporary 18-basket disc golf course will be set up around the lake, using the park’s pier, amphitheater and ample trees to challenge players. The event will be hosted by the DeFunk Disco Inc., and players from throughout the Florida Panhandle and southern Alabama will play rounds during the day.

“We are excited to have the chance to show off downtown DeFuniak Springs, all while hosting a one-of-a-kind disc golf experience for players,” said Neal Kelly, the club's vice president. “Our mission is to enrich our community while sharing our passion for disc golf, and this is just one way we are doing that.”

Tournament fees start at $30 and day-of registration will be available. All proceeds will help support the club’s upcoming outreach efforts.

The following Saturday, disc golfers will return to the lake yard with a less competitive mission to help provide exposure to the sport. In conjunction with the city’s LakeFest, the club will set up a temporary course and provide those curious about the sport a chance to try their hand.

“Through the support of our tournament participants, we are going to be able to in turn expose the community to a healthy and family friendly activity that they may not have experienced before,” Kelly said. “I have no doubt that like me, they will be hooked.”
