While Lee Ann Dorn continues to fight for her life in a local hospital, a pair of her close friends have started a fundraising account to help the family with medical bills.
The GoFundMe account, started Tuesday evening, has raised close to $2,000 already.
"I told (her family) I didn't want them to worry about the financial aspect," said Dawn Steighner, who started the account with her husband, Mark.
The couple became friends with Lee Ann and her husband, Phil Dorn, shortly after all four moved to the area. Phil is the athletic director and head football coach at Fort Walton Beach High School.
Dawn said she and Lee Ann had dinner Thursday night, two days before the boating accident that left Lee Ann critically injured.
The 55-year-old Destin woman stepped off the back of a boat near Destin's East Pass and became entangled in the propeller. A medical helicopter took her to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, where she remains in the intensive care unit.
Dawn said she and Mark have not gone to the hospital, since Lee Ann is not allowed to have many visitors. Setting up the account was something they could do to help.
"She's a go-getter," Dawn said. "She's definitely the one in the room that's very outgoing, a caring person."
Dawn said Lee Ann loves her two children, Karl and Chelsey, and would do anything for them.
