PANAMA CITY — Social media was abuzz this week after parent Melinda Smith shared a comment she said was written on her son’s assignment by his Rutherford High School teacher that read “WTF is this? Absolutely no credit.”

The incident prompted an investigation and has been referred to the district’s Human Resources department, according to Rutherford Principal Coy Pilson. Pilson declined to name the teacher involved.

Smith told local TV news station WJHG it was the phrase “WTF” that was upsetting — not that her child was receiving no credit for the assignment. She stated she hopes there are consequences for the teacher.

The acronym “WTF” is popular shorthand for “What the F(expletive).”

Many commenters on Facebook came to the teacher’s defense, saying this incident was an overreaction.

Still, Pilson said the teacher will be disciplined. Pilson said the teacher is both sincerely apologetic and distraught over the incident.

“She was apologetic and it was a mistake on her part,” Pilson said. “When we make mistakes, we try to correct those mistakes and move forward.”
