As a lesson in economics and its effects on people, the students in Gabrielle Thomas’ West DeFuniak Elementary School class became producers and consumers by participating in a classroom marketplace.

Students designed their own shops, providing a name, slogan, commercial script, product description, price, interest inventory and consumer comment box.

The products had to be paper-based, and each student had a consumer spending log to keep track of the money. They applied knowledge of supply and demand, scarcity and trading as they sold their products.

“Students took their roles seriously and came away with a sense of accomplishment,” Thomas said.
