Folks on the Okaloosa Island pier got an eyeful Thursday, a 9-foot shark observers believe was a tiger shark waging a two-hour battle with fishermen.
OKALOOSA ISLAND — All the way from Texas, Dana Pierce and her family spent the last of their vacation days seeing something not many get the chance to see.
At the Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier, Pierce said they watched four guys Thursday evening surround what is believed to be a tiger shark measuring at around 9 feet.
As she went to stand with her son fishing on the pier, Pierce said they watched four guys continue a two-hour battle with the shark and pulled it into shallow waters. After removing the fishing hook from the shark's mouth, Pierce said she watched them turn the shark around, take a few photos, and free it.
"It was a pretty neat experience to see because you don’t see very many big sharks like that," she said.
Pierce said the shark had noticeable stripes and spots, which is what made everyone believe it was a tiger shark rather than a bull shark.
Although Pierce was happy to take photos while observing the experience from above on the pier, she said others braved the water and took photos near the shark.
Pierce said the crowd on the pier watched as the shark swam back out into deeper water.
