PANAMA CITY — The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice in Tallahassee, Rebuild Bay County and Mission850 came together to help a Panama City resident still recovering from Hurricane Michael on Wednesday.
Volunteers cleared grass, fixed up the house and handled other tasks for Thelma Faison.
“I love because I needed it,” said Faison, who is unable to handle some tasks due to a disability. “The more the merrier. I’ve only been out the hospital for two weeks.”
Volunteers were in and out the home and some worked in the yard. Her home sustained damage from Hurricane Michael, including water stains on the ceiling.
“I had to have a new roof and a new fence,” Faison said.
Eugene Morris, state and federal director for the Department of Juvenile Justice, said volunteers helped with cleaning, debris removal, window washing, painting and general upkeep. He said he has been down to affected areas since the storm and that there is still work to be done considering the devastation and encouraged organizations to help.
“At the Department of Juvenile Justice, we look at the state of Florida as one community,” Morris said. “When a part of the community is hurting, we’re all hurting. This is our way of pitching in to give back because we believe it’s important.”
Volunteers also helped out at a second site Wednesday in Panama City. Almost a year after Hurricane Michael landed, Panama City and other affected areas are still recovering. Buildings remain damaged, residents are fighting with insurance companies and survivors deal with mental health concerns and shortages in housing.
Dot Wagner, mission coordinator for Mission850, said they have brought in numerous groups to help out after since the hurricane. Mission850 is a faith-based volunteer initiative.
“We’re bringing (volunteers) down to bring hope and help,” Wagner said.
