The City of Destin staff replaced the banner by 1 p.m. Tuesday, and the sign was good as new.

DESTIN — Someone tagged the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village sign on U.S. Highway 98 on Monday night.

Less than 24 hours later, Destin crews had replaced the sign.

A library employee noticed the vandalized property while she was on her way to work Tuesday morning, said Catherine Card, the city’s public information manager.

The incident was reported to Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers.

"We are at a spring break season," Card said. "We don’t know if it’s a local. We don’t know if it’s somebody from out of town."

According to Card, it was the first time the sign had been vandalized.

City staffers tried to removed the graffiti but were unsuccessful, Card said.

Luckily, the city planned to update the sign at the end of the summer, so there was a replacement banner on hand.

The new sign was up by 1 p.m. Tuesday.
