With the job market looking downright miserable, many job seekers are asking where to go next?


Will Miles, who works for CareerSource Okaloosa Walton, suggests looking into the fields of health care or retail. He said these are the fields that are hiring the most staff right now.



One of the retailers, Walmart, issued a press release announcing the hiring of some 9,400 hundred employees throughout Florida in a variety of jobs capacities. While the company said the number of new jobs in Okaloosa and Walton was unknown, the release said Destin is one of the hot locations for these jobs.

Along with the popular grocery retailer, HCA Healthcare is hiring in Fort Walton Beach. Approximately 158 positions were available on HCA Healthcare’s website as of Wednesday.


There is also a larger need for drivers as many restaurants shift to delivery and curbside pickup.


Third party driving services such as UberEats and DoorDash are always looking for new drivers. The two companies boast that working with their companies means being your own boss.

UberEats has four requirements for those interested. Delivery drivers must have valid drivers license, registration and insurance, have at least one year of driving experience and meet driving age minimum. Job seekers must have a vehicle under 21 years old with four or two doors.


DoorDash has similar requirements.

Another store that is looking to hire in the area is Dominos. The popular pizza place is looking to fill around 40 positions in their six Okaloosa and two Walton locations.


"Domino’s is committed to serving local communities and providing hot pizza to everyone who is looking for a meal," according to a press release from the pizza delivery chain.

The idea of living without a paycheck can be scary, but there are options, Miles said. Job seekers should check out CareerSource’s job posting newsletter and the Employ Florida website.


CareerSource is a career resource center with a mission of ensuring "that every citizen in Okaloosa and Walton Counties has the opportunity and skills necessary to necessary to engage in meaningful employment." The center offers no-cost services such as resume assistance, interviewing skills, and job search assistance.


Miles also suggest workers who are laid off file for unemployment through Florida’s online portal.
