At a recent Walton County Board of Commissioners meeting, the topic of accessibility of the archived meeting tapes was discussed. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 set forth sweeping rights to those with disabilities to be able to access not just public and private buildings, but also other amenities such as assist devices to allow hearing-impaired attendees to participate in meetings.

In 2010, the 21st Century Communications and Video Act was passed mandating closed captioning of online video, and in 2014 the FCC published mandates strengthening these requirements. To comply with these requirements Walton County is making arrangements for online video to be closed-captioned.

Our Democratic clubs and committees have committed to provide real time captioning of our meetings starting with our July meeting titled “Customary Use Revisited.” If you are someone who struggles to hear the speakers at these meetings, we hope to make it more accessible for all. We welcome your participation and appreciate feedback from those attending on this new service to our community.
