Five Below coming to Destin

DESTIN — A new option for discounted shopping could soon join the ranks of a local retail center.

If you recently visited Paradise Key at Kelly Plantation near the intersection of U.S. Highway 98 and the Mid-Bay Bridge, odds are you have seen a sign that says a Five Below is expected to open this spring.

While that might be true, Elliot Kampert, growth management director for Okaloosa County, said Tuesday that he hadn’t heard anything about the addition.

He didn’t expect that to change unless a permit was needed, which he said would only be necessary if Five Below planned to put up a new building or remodel an existing one.

Because no applications have reached his desk, Campert believes the company is most likely taking over a vacant location. The area in the shopping center where the sign hangs was previously occupied by Dressbarn.

“They would not need any specific applications to move in there,” he said. “Beyond zoning ... we don’t dictate uses.”

A property manager for Paradise Key at Kelly Plantation, who didn’t want to be named, refused to comment on the addition or give any other information.

The Daily News also reached out to Five Below’s corporate office, which did not immediately respond.

In August of 2018, the business — popular for its $1 to $5 prices for all products — hosted a grand opening for its Fort Walton Beach store at Uptown Station that more than 100 people attended.

According to Five Below’s website, there are more than 80 locations in Florida. The closest other ones are in Pensacola and Panama City Beach.

“I guess they just decided it’s a good spot for them,” Kampert said of the Destin location.
