Publix will anchor new 70,000-square foot shopping center in city of Milton
The city of Milton soon will have its own Publix store.
After keeping it under wraps for several months, the developer of a new 70,000-square-foot shopping center at the corner of Dogwood Drive and Magnolia Street announced this week that Florida-based grocery store chain Publix will anchor the shopping center.
The developers of the property, Atlanta-based Branch Properties and Merganser Enterprises LLC, are set to soon break ground on the shopping center known as Merganser Commons at Dogwood Estates. The project is slated to be complete by April 2022.
The entire shopping center property, when complete, will include the 46,811-square-foot Publix, as well as two additional buildings totaling about 20,000 square feet of retail space, and another 1.3-acre parcel with up to 7,500 square feet of retail space for future development.
A Publix spokesman declined to confirm the store's opening to the News Journal, saying the lease had not been signed yet.
Branch Properties CIO Jesse Shannon confirmed Publix's arrival in a press release issued Wednesday.
“Publix choosing to add a Milton location to their Pensacola area portfolio is a testament to the long-term viability of the site and surrounding area,” Shannon said in the press release. “Merganser Commons will fill a void in the area and serve as a vital asset for the growing population in Milton.”
The other stores in the shopping center are expected to be a mix of national stores and mom-and-pop shops.
Milton Mayor Heather Lindsay said she’s “very excited” to have a Publix come within the city limits, although she joked that people will now have to choose between their beloved Winn Dixie store and the new Publix store.
“We’re glad to be able to offer more selections of grocery products for Milton’s growing population,” Lindsay said. “We have more people coming to live here, and I think we need another grocery store.”
The development was received with open arms by the Milton City Council, which in September 2020 approved a rezoning application for the four parcels of land that will make up the property.
The Publix shopping center will be located near the Milton Community Center, one of the fastest growing areas of the city. People who live in nearby residential neighborhoods have voiced concern to the city that the large new development will bring with it traffic issues, crime, noise and flooding issues, but city officials maintain the new development will not have a negative impact on the surrounding area.
