'Modern Family' cast is back to work on final season: 'First of many lasts'
It's the beginning of the end for the Pritchett family.
The cast of "Modern Family" reunited Wednesday to embark on their first day of the 11th and final season of the Emmy-winning comedy, which is set to premiere in 2020.
"We (are) back for the last season!" Sofia Vergara, who portrays Gloria Delgado, wrote alongside a group picture. "First table read of season 11!!! I (love) U My Modern Family!"
The cast re-created a group picture from the first table read in 2009. Co-creator Steven Levitan shared the side-by-side comparison, writing, "Ten years ago we took the first cast photo outside our first #modernfamily table read. Today, the ending begins."
Vergara shared the same photos, writing, "10 years later!"
In the new image, the "Modern Family" kids are all grown up, with Vergara embracing her on-screen son Rico Rodriguez (who plays Manny Delgado), who turned 21 on Wednesday.
The cast and crew sang happy birthday to Rodriguez during the table read and presented him with a cake, complete with candles.
"First birthday cake of season 11," Rodriguez wrote on his Instagram Story. "Thank you @abcmodern family."
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays Mitchell Pritchett, commemorated the "first of many lasts" on his Instagram. "The last first table read with my Modern Family. I love this cast and crew so much. Happy season 11," he captioned a group picture.
Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who plays his adoptive daughter, Lily Tucker-Pritchett, shared a throwback of the pair from 2012. "Seven years ago today. Almost nothing has changed," she wrote.
The ABC series, created by Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, became an instant hit after premiering in 2009. The show, which centers around an extended Los Angeles family, has won 22 Emmy Awards, in addition to a Golden Globe for the best musical or comedy television series in 2012.
