Solomon Tape and Emily Derrick of South Walton High School were part of Youth Tour 2013.

Two dozen students from 11 area high schools spent a part of St. Valentine’s Day at a mock session of the Florida Supreme Court arguing the legality of drug testing peers who are also athletes.

After a short walk across the road to the state House of Representatives, the students met lawmakers and received an introduction to the legislative process.

The events were part of a two-day, all-expenses-paid Youth Tour 2013 trip sponsored by CHELCO, Inc.

It started Feb. 13 with a visit to the Challenger Learning Center. At the center, the students saw a 3-D IMAX movie about space junk orbiting earth and took part in an electromagnetism workshop.

The CHELCO contingent was one of nine Youth Tour groups visiting the state’s capital. More than 110 high school juniors from electric cooperatives throughout Florida participated.

Two local high schoolers in this year’s Youth Tour class were from South Walton  — Emily Derrick and Solomon Tape of South Walton High School. Among others attending were Hunter Bell and Samantha Kirby of Walton High School in DeFuniak Springs, and Devin Herrington and Noah Simmons of Freeport High School.

Also taking part in the Youth Tour trip were Kristian Ealum, Kaitlyn Green and Tyler Head, whose family members work at CHELCO.
