WALTON COUNTY SNOWBIRDS: Having a ball

Debra Wynn
Walton Sun

When you become a member of Walton County Snowbirds, you may choose to also register to participate in team sports. You could play a different game every weekday if you desire.

Beginning Jan. 6 and going at least through March, Paul Smithers Snowbird Legends Basketball League meets Mondays from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Life Center at Destin United Methodist Church. “Pick up” three-man teams, light shirt/dark shirt, play half-court games, using National Senior Games Association rules. The group is open to locals 55 years of age and older and to members of other area snowbird organizations. In previous years, teams have participated in the Florida State Senior Games. Although there is no charge to play, donations are collected and given to the church as thanks for the use of the facilities.

Softball is played Mondays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. at Morgan Sports Complex in Destin.

Further information about the games and the Walton County Snowbirds in general is available by accessing the website waltoncountysnowbirds.com.

The same website contains extensive information about golf for local snowbird players. A list of specials offered at area courses, league info, and contact email for the coordinators are available. Tuesday and Thursday League play takes place at the Golf Garden, Destin. Bob and Peggy Breetz report that they had so much fun participating in the Tuesday rounds that when a leader for the activity was needed, Bob stepped up.

After a few years’ hiatus, golf scrambles at Bluewater Bay resumed last season thanks to Mike Short.

Pickleball, a relatively new sport combining aspects of table tennis, badminton, and tennis has become a popular pastime for many seniors. Walton County Snowbirds lessons are scheduled on Wednesdays, beginning Jan. 8 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Destin Community Center. Equipment is provided. Fee is a nominal $3 per person. Sessions at Destin United Methodist Church (dates/times to be determined; contact coordinators listed on website) are open to local snowbirds.

The Mainsail Tennis Courts in Miramar Beach hosts WCS players on Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon. There is a $20 fee which covers four months of play, the first session of which was Dec. 12. Registrants must provide their own rackets and tennis balls for this co-ed activity.

Four-person teams bowl at Hurricane Lanes in Destin on Fridays at 11:30 a.m. from Jan. 3 to March 6. The cost, including shoes and balls, is $9 per person per session.

Join the Walton County Snowbirds and you’ll have lots of opportunities to have a ball.

Debra Wynn, whose other home is in Connecticut, is looking forward to her fifth year as a Walton County Snowbirds’ member.
