Alaqua announces ‘Empty the Shelters’ this weekend
FREEPORT— Alaqua Animal Refuge is participating in BISSELL Pet Foundation’s (BPF) Empty the Shelters event this weekend, July 10-12, with reduced adoption fees for dogs and kittens of only $25.
Over 160 BPF shelter and rescue partners are participating in this reduced fee adoption event across the country, which aims to find forever homes for thousands of cats and dogs. All animals adopted will be microchipped and spayed/neutered to prevent further pet homelessness.
“Bringing awareness to adoptable animals in shelters is a priority for BPF,” said Cathy Bissell, founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. More pets run away on the 4th of July than any other day of the year. The increase in shelter intake puts pressure on our partners, who are already working with limited staff and funding due to COVID-19. The best way for us to support them is to help their pets find loving homes.”
With fostering pets becoming so prevalent during COVID-19, BPF will also honor foster-to-adopt cases that start as fosters during the weekend of July 10-12 and are finalized up to one week after the event.
In accordance with CDC guidelines, Alaqua continues to remain closed to the public for visitation. However, the organization is still doing adoptions virtually. Potential adopters can visit the Alaqua website at www.Alaqua.org to see all the pets up for adoption and fill out an application. Once the application is received, an Alaqua team member will be in contact.
“Cathy Bissell is a great friend of Alaqua, and we are blessed to have such a wonderful partnership with the BISSELL Pet Foundation,” said Alaqua Founder Laurie Hood. “We have so many deserving dogs and cats that are looking for their new home and we are thankful to the BISSELL Pet Foundation for sponsoring the majority of their adoption fees. It is a great time to adopt your new best friend!”
