Derek Nowell is new executive chef at Cafe Thirty-A. SPECIAL TO THE SUN

Derek Nowell was recently named the new executive chef at Cafe Thirty-A.

Nowell, who has been cooking for 21 years, was born and raised in Arkansas and moved to South Walton in 2009 to explore the culinary scene at the beach he loves so much. He spent four years cooking at Firefly in Panama City Beach. He started working at Cafe Thirty-A in 2013 as a line cook, but was shortly promoted to Sous Chef.

Nowell is passionate about food and that comes through so clearly in the kitchen and every dish he creates.

Nowell said he "likes good, simple food,” and his motto is “Let the food do the talking.”

Cafe Thirty-A is known for their creative dishes and excellent service, and Nowell adds to that reputation.

"Derek has really taken the reins and is doing an excellent job," said Harriet Crommelin, owner of Cafe Thirty-A. "We're getting more 5-star reviews now than ever. He is well-respected by the staff and everyone is looking forward to the future."
