Couple brings 'gift of pizza' to the Gulf Coast

Stegg's Pizzeria is a new business located along Scenic Gulf Drive.

For New York native Russell Stegemann and his wife, Kimm, who hails from Chicago, it is fair to say the two know what it takes to make a good pizza. And at Stegg’s Pizzeria, a pizza is actually the pie.

After searching for a great Brooklyn style pizza, Stegemann said he gave up and decided to open his own pizzeria.

“Our theme is ‘for the love of pizza,’ so that’s our motivation. We’re pizza-crazy-loving people,” he said.

Stegemann told The Sun that a Brooklyn style pizza has a thinner crust which is made with cold, low rising dough.

“We do a very unique method that is old fashioned and it is called cold proofing,” he said. “The dough is made fresh every day … and we cold proof it in the cooler for three days. Then for our toppings we buy the best money can buy like natural whole-milk cheese.”

The quality and care goes into making every pie in a smooth assembly line and off into the rotating oven for five minutes at 500 degrees where a piping-hot pizza awaits to be devoured.

Located next to Bad Ass Coffee at 1688 Scenic Gulf Drive, Stegg’s also has delivery by bicycle if you are within one mile west and one-and-a-half miles east.

Stegg’s also offers starters, salads and calzones to go along with their specialty pizzas, or you can make your own.

Stegemann recalled how a family vacationing from Italy recently tried their pizza and fell in love.

“I told them ‘this will be the best pizza you’ve ever had,’ and they’re from Italy … so I was watching them from inside and saw them get up and the daughter came in and said, ‘this was the best pie I’ve had,’” he said.

“We hear, ‘we’re glad someone’s making New York style pizza,’” said pie cook Eric Everest.

“We started on this a year ago and we are finally bringing the gift of pizza to the community,” said Stegemann.

Stegg’s Pizzeria held its grand opening Monday. Hours of operation are currently 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and will change to close at 9 p.m. starting in September. For more information call 850-460-7818 or visit
