Snowbirds have busy week ahead

Holiday decorations seem to be present everywhere, in shopping centers, stores, restaurants and on residences. Christmas music is playing on the radio, advertisements on television showcase items for gift giving, and even the Walton County Snowbirds are celebrating the season with their “ugly Christmas sweater contest." It will take place at the next general meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 7. You don’t want to miss the vendors, the contest, the entertainment by JB Dyess or the door prizes donated by the generous local business owners. It will be held at 10 a.m. at the Destin United Methodist Church Life Center, 200 Beach Drive. Please park in the east parking lot, in the area past the entrance to the Life Center. They will be registering members beginning at 9 a.m., so arrive early for that and to visit the vendor tables.

For those already in town and anxious to get your season started, there will be a registration from 8-11 a.m. (please note time change) on Monday, Dec. 5, at Faith Assembly Fellowship Hall, 306 South Geronimo in Miramar Beach. The next registration will be from 8:30-10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 2, and again from 8:30-10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4. Attending these registrations will give you the opportunity to sign up for more than 30 activities of varying interests and find out about social events like the Biloxi trips and the dolphin cruise. Activity leaders and event coordinators will be present to answer any questions. More registration dates and times can be found on the Walton County Snowbird website under “join."

The first full week of December will keep the snowbirds busy. Aside from a registration on Monday and a general meeting on Wednesday, there is the Destin Christmas Parade on Saturday and on Sunday they will be awed by the Lighted Boat Parade on the harbor. Also, the basketball players will start their season on Monday. Details on the website. No wonder this group hurries down to the Emerald Coast to begin actively experiencing fun and fellowship.

If not participating, you can cheer along the parade route for the Walton County Snowbird Float. They have been diligent in their interpretation of “A Fishing Village Christmas” for the annual Destin Christmas Parade held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, along Harbor Boulevard.

Last year’s Walton County Snowbirds Lighted Boat Parade Party was such a success that they are offering it again this year. They have once more reserved the upper deck of Dewey Destin’s on the Harbor for a social gathering beginning at 5:30 p.m., which will include a seafood appetizer buffet. There are a limited number of tickets available to Walton County Snowbirds at Monday’s registration and, if any remain, at the general meeting on Wednesday.
