SANTA ROSA BEACH — A local group, known for riding out winters along the Gulf Coast, is gearing up to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

According to co-presidents Sharon and Gary Pinylo, the Walton County Snowbirds will highlight three decades of experience during its meeting Feb. 5.

There, Ken Hair, president of Children in Crisis, will also give a short presentation on his organization. Sharon said that’s because the snowbirds are selling coupon books this year with all proceeds going to the local children’s group.

“We saw coupon books being sold here in the area, and we just thought that might be a really good fundraising venture for us,” she said, adding that the books cost $15 and can be purchased at general meetings and registrations.

Also unique to this season is a Zumba class and a dinner social, Gary said.

He added that he and his wife, who are from Ontario, Canada, have been Walton County Snowbirds for seven years. They hope to carry on the group’s legacy.

“We like your sun, we like your beaches (and) we’ve been coming to Florida for years,” Gary said. “We’re just trying to work with our (board) to make sure the club is successful.”

The group currently has about 1,300 members, divided between more than 220 Canadians and roughly 1,000 Americans. Of those, more than 200 are new members this year.

The club offers more than 30 different activities for members to chose from.

“One of the greatest satisfactions we have is being able to provide all these services to the members,” he said. “The greatest experience that we have, besides that, is the different individuals that we’ve encountered throughout the years.”
