A 75-year-old man from Freeport has died following a three-vehicle crash involving a school bus on Monday afternoon, according to a Florida Highway Patrol press release.

A Walton County school bus driven by a 74-year-old man from DeFuniak Springs was traveling north on U.S. Highway 331 near Hawthorn Road in the left lane about 4:30 p.m. when the driver suffered a possible medical emergency, according to FHP.

The driver of the bus was transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The bus was occupied with 29 passengers with minor injuries to only a few.

Two white pickup trucks, one driven by a 77-year-old man from Bruce and another driven by the Freeport driver were traveling south on U.S. 331 at the time.

The school bus left the road and traveled in the center median near a left turn lane and crossed into the southbound lanes of traffic striking one of the pickup trucks.

The bus continued traveling across the lanes and collided with the front left of the second white pickup, FHP said.

The bus continued off the west shoulder and the front of the bus struck a ditch. The white pickup, as result of the collision, began to rotate and left the roadway on the west shoulder.

The driver of the bus was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The bus was occupied with 29 passengers with minor injuries to only a few. Parents and school district staff were notified and responded to assist at the scene, according to FHP.
