DESTIN — The body of a missing 14-year-old swimmer was recovered in Miramar Beach about 1.5 miles from where he was reported missing Wednesday evening, according to an Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office Facebook post.

Crews from the OCSO, the U.S. Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and local lifeguard programs spent Wednesday evening and most of the day Thursday combing the waters around Henderson Beach State Park looking for the boy, a visiting teen from Louisiana whose name has not been released.

Coast Guard Sector Mobile (Alabama) watchstanders received notification about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday from the OCSO that the boy’s friends last saw him struggling to swim in the surf 200 feet off the beach before he went under the water and did not resurface, a Coast Guard news release said.

A witness said the teen went into the Gulf of Mexico near 3500 Scenic Highway 98 in Destin about 6:30 p.m. and began to struggle with the current, according to an OCSO news release. A person who tried to rescue him also began to struggle but was able to get out of the water. He said he lost sight of the boy.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, Coast Guard, Destin Beach Patrol and Walton County crews helped search for a 14-year-old boy who disappeared in the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday evening.

Coast Guard crews searched through the night and continued the search Thursday assistance from local and state agencies.

Sector Mobile watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched a 45-foot Response Boat–Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Destin, a Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Aviation Training Center Mobile, and the crew of Coast Guard Cutter Ridley, an 87-foot patrol boat from Panama City.

According to the OCSO, the boy's body was ultimately spotted by a beachgoer in Miramar Beach.

Members of the Okaloosa County Sheriffs Office Dive Team return to a vehicle after searching in the Gulf of Mexico in Destin for a missing 14-year-old swimmer. The boy went missing in rough surf Wednesday evening near the Crab Trap Restaurant.
