Survey to help determine improvements for aging Doak Campbell Stadium

There was a time when Doak Campbell Stadium was the perfect host for Florida State football fans.

But times have changed as fans across the country are skipping stadiums in favor of watching games at home.

On Friday, FSU will send emails to as many as 500,000 fans and boosters seeking input on potential improvements to aging Doak Campbell Stadium.

The survey will ask fans to evaluate their stadium experience and ask what upgrades they would like to see implemented.

While a timeline and funding process have not been established, the hope is the survey will help FSU create a vision and develop a plan for the stadium’s future.

Doak  is entering its 71st season this fall and was built at a cost of $250,000.

During Wednesday’s athletics board meeting, FSU Director of Athletics David Coburn  said Seminole Boosters Inc., is working with Legends, a consulting firm that operates in the athletics and other spaces, on various options.

College and professional teams across the country are investing heavily in time and money to entice fans back to stadium seats.

Improvements and amenities are needed to keep pace with the demands of fans who have options on where and how to watch FSU football. Seat width, for instance, has long been a concern of ticket holders. 

“They are going to do some evaluations for us,” Coburn said.

“Improvements needed in seating and other things within the stadium and also look at potential revenue streams that we might be able to use in order to do some things that they suggest.”

FSU's recent renovations feature the premium seating Dunlap Champions Club in the stadium's south end zone and the installation of more than 9,368 square feet of video boards, including the second-largest video board in the country in the north end zone. 

Additionally, more involved structural repair and repainting of the stadium was implemented four years ago at the cost of $24 million.
