TCPalm Super 11: Centennial LB Deshauwn Alleyne has high expectations, but he can reach them

TCPalm is announcing its annual Super 11, the list of the top recruited senior football players on the Treasure Coast. TCPalm is counting down from No. 11 to No. 1, with two players announced per week. The No. 1 player will be revealed on Sunday, July 26.

PORT ST. LUCIE — Deshauwn Alleyne has his sights set high for 2020.

"I want to be the best I can be in the nation," Alleyne said. "I want to No. 1 in the nation. Senior season, I want to be the best. Represent Florida, which is one of the best football states in the nation."

If Alleyne's goals sound unrealistic, that probably means you haven't been paying attention to the St. Lucie West Centennial senior linebacker.

Since the 6-foot, 210-pounder stepped into the starting lineup as a sophomore, he's been one of the best in the area — and the state. Alleyne announced himself with 17 tackles and seven tackles for loss in the 2018 Kickoff Classic against a talented Astronaut squad and earned TCPalm's Defensive Game Ball.

He hasn't looked back since.

Alleyne is a two-time first-team All-Area selection and a two-time Class 8A all-state selection. He was one of only two sophomores in the state's biggest class to earn all-state honors in 2018.

Last season, Alleyne had 18 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and scored two defensive touchdowns and combined with Caleb Excellent to give Centennial the best inside linebacker duo on the Treasure Coast.

"He can do everything," Eagles coach Josh Watkins said. "He’s our quarterback on the defensive side. He’s our tackler. He’s a sideline-to-sideline football player that can run down anybody. He covers well, plays the run game well, he does everything well. He’s top of the line.

"He’s non-stop. He doesn’t like coming off the field. He’s one of the guys that if you say, 'We’re going to give you two plays off to catch your breath,' he gets mad. And that’s what you want. He loves football."

Alleyne, rated No. 3 on the TCPalm Super 11, has been going through the recruiting process since the spring of his sophomore year.

He has almost a dozen Power 5 offers. He listed a top five of Auburn, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska and Penn State — in no particular order — in March.

But that was before the coronavirus pandemic shut down school campuses and cancelled spring practices, which are vital for recruiting. Even though Alleyne has several offers, that month of having college coaches on campus can be critical to the recruiting process. The shutdown also meant Alleyne was unable to take any official visits, which he wants to do before making his decision.

He hopes to take his official visits as soon as colleges will allow and then make his announcement shortly after.

"I want them to want me as much as I want to go to the school," Alleyne said. "I’m not saying I need to start my freshman or sophomore year. I just want to have an opportunity to compete."

Until then, he still has one more year at Centennial, and he'll be one of the clear leaders of an Eagles team looking for its third consecutive playoff appearance and first district title since 2011.

"He's one of our leaders," Watkins said. "He keeps everybody in line. He's the first guy there. He’s yelling at kids to get out to the field. He’s the last guy to leave the field. He’s a coach’s dream. Honestly. as a high school football player, you don't get many like him who come along."
